There are other songs in the world!
My brother has been listening to the same radio station for the past three hours, and I can hear it from my room.

Let me tally how many repeats I've heard -
The Way I Are - III
Crank Dat Soulja Boy - III
Ay Bay Bay - III
Kiss, Kiss - II
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - II
(I'm sure there are more, but I just can't recall them.)

Ahh. There are better songs in the world in the same genre, why not play them?!

That's because many radio stations are now automated and the broadcast often comes from another location. That's why radio stations have such severely limited playlists. They don't have live disk jockeys that actually play the music like they used to. There have been many complaints about this practice but the main argument I've heard for it is that people like familiarity. They like hearing songs they know even if it means repeating them over and over again. I don't know about anybody else but this is precisely the reason why I no longer listen to the radio.

While the answers so far have been quite good , the main reason is that they have worked out that the average listener only listens for about 40 or so minutes at one time.

That's how those top 40 stations are. They're playlist has about 40 songs, and they play like 20 of them, and they repeat them over and over and over and over...
I mean I like most of them, so that's why I put them on my ipod and listen to them when I want so I don't get sick of them too fast.
