one of my really good friends gave me a poem yesterday to show me his appreciation of our friendship. And the poem was just stunningly beautiful and brought tears in my eyes when i read it. He took the credit for writing the poem himself, saying that it took him about half a day to write it. However later on, just out of curiosity I Google-d it and found that he had copied the poem from a poetry website. The words were identical but the verses had been rearranged by him to make it sound nicer. So now I don't know what to say to him. I'm thinking of just ignoring it because I don't want to make him feel bad.
Do you think I should confront him about it?

after reading all of your replies, this is how i've handled the situation.

I've put a positive spin on it. I said "Oh i didn't know you published your poems online...you never told me that" and I gave him the link to that poem website.
He was just surprised to see "his" poem online. So i haven't actually accused him of lying. If he has lied, then atleast he will know it in his heart, even if he does not confess it to me.

So what to you think about how i've handled it ????

Honesty is a big deal. If you can't trust what he says then you have to question how good a friend he is. Why don't you send the original version of the poem back to him with some innocent remark like "I like that poem too, but I thought it went like this...." That way he knows you know, but it's not a big confrontation.

Ha ha it is so incorrect it is humorous. Anywho, i in my opinion think of you're able to tell him/her with regard to the poem and clarify that it replaced right into a splash strange and mean. or you may counter with a poem you wrote (or replica mines XD): Roses are pink Violets are Blue You Lied approximately That Poem and you probably did no longer tell what's real.

look, though he lied to you about the poem that he wrote himself may be the wrong thing he did.....
but he at least wrote a poem in the appreciation of your friendship.....
i mean he wrote a poem for you that your friendship is strong...i hope that you understand what i mean....
'ANY POEM IS BETTER THAN NO POEM AT ALL'
go ahead and tell him that you found out that he had copied the poem..don't be harsh.tell him softly and nicely...
tell him that you shouldnt tell lies......

Yes. But then I really hate liars. Especially when they are trying to build a relationship with me. If they start off lying then when will it stop?
