I have to go for day surgery to remove a breast lump & I know they will try to load me up with prescription painkillers after. I'd like to avoid taking them if I can & take something more natural. Any tips?

In my direct experience Raspberry leaf tea (an infusion) gets rid of tooth ache BETTER than anything a dentist's ever prescribed me. It seems to stop neurological pain VERY effectively, although it's often only thought of as dealing with labour pains. The Tea has an "acquired" taste which takes a little getting used to, but that makes you only sip a little bit at first, which is good.

Had been told it's compounds were the "inspiration" behind pethidine, but after a bit of research I'm not not so sure that's to case. Not sure if/how it interacts with an prescription/herbal meds, so you should check first.

If the procedure is expected to be painful, you'll be offered (given?) a local anaesthetic. I don't think there are herbal painkillers, that you can legally get your hands on anyway, that do a comparable job. I recon Acupuncture/TENS machines are the only alternative painkillers that might be able to the job of a local.

Cannabis contains natural chemicals which alter the perception/outcome of conditions/symptoms so it IS a drug, as are ALL herbal medicines.

It's just it's not (as yet) controlled by the drugs companies. Does work for some kinds of pain/symptoms.

I am sorry that I cannot recommend anything natural, I will say that if you do take the pain killers, just take them for a short amount of time, no more than a week and you will be fine. My brother is very sensitive to pain killers and hated them too, he had shoulder surgery, he took some hydrocodone that was so little, 325 mg with Tylenol, it said to take it 6 times a day but he only did it 2 times a day in the beginning and then completely stopped. So just don't take them for a lengthy time, especially no more than 2 weeks and you have no worry about addiction. Have a talk with your doc and express your concerns, he may then only give you darveset, it is mostly Tylenol. I admire you and I do wish the best for you with your treatment and surgery. Remenber the pain is only the worst for 3 days. I really do think you will be fine.

They cannot force you to take the pain killers. If you need them then take them. Learn to take only the smallest amount you need to get the pain down to a level that you can deal with. Try meditation or self hypnosis, try just ignoring the pain. Doing exercises helps (as long as what you do does not cause more pain). Try distracting yourself, thinking about how bad the pain is just makes is worse. Things like watching a movie or reading a book, or playing games or talking to people can make you forget about the pain. But I do stress, painkillers are not a bad thing, only the overuse or abuse of them is. Most 'herbal' remedies are the grounds for most of the modern painkillers. The active ingredient in willow bark is the same as the main ingredient in aspirin. Almost all the other painkillers are made from poppy's. Acupuncture and pressure point treatment also works for many people.

I have heard of a product you can get in a health food store, it is derived from Marijuana, without the THC, the stuff that makes you high. I've heard it is awesome. Haven't tried it myself, but a few people I know have and they swear by it. It comes in a liquid, I guess because of the processing to remove the drug from it.

Good luck!

btw-get the script filled anyway, in case you cannot find this or it doesn't work for you, at least you will have something to kill the pain. You can always throw the pills away if you don't need them. I don't know the name of the product, perhaps a health food store can help you. Don't try a chain, you would need to speak to an independant owner.

Yeah, hate to say it, but I think marijuana's the best natural painkiller out there. If you're in Cali, they'll give you a prescription for it. Otherwise, if you're not already into it (and you probably aren't if you didn't think of it) it may be kind of hard to figure out where to get it from.

Also, unless you're in California, your doctor will probably tell you it's a bad idea just because it's illegal.

I suggest you go ahead and get the meds. It might be a LOT more painful than you are expecting it to be. If it isn't, you can always flush them.
Personally, I have the pharmacist cut all of mine in half. That way, I can only take half a dose when I don't need as much.

I applaud your wanting to avoid pharmaceuticals and could suggest a few alternatives, however I feel that would be irresponsible of me. Getting invasive surgery for the first time is not a time to be experimenting. Find out the best alternative for yourself right after this surgery so that you and your body can be prepared for the next time. Anesthesia is not just there for your comfort, it's also to prevent your body from spasming in pain response and causing major irreparable damage to your tissue.

One way to mitigate the adverse affects of meds is to drink absurd amounts of water (not anything else) before and after the surgery. Continue until you feel the meds have been flushed out of your system.

Um first of all...I don't think anything "natural" will kill your pain like the pills will. And second of all...will they not be putting u under anesthesia? That's not natural, so what's the diff? What's ur reason for this? Because, if it's a past addiction then we have a diff story here.
