He was well received by several Italian sponsors including Machievelli. His greatest patron was probably Francois I of France who gave him a chateau and pay and entitled him "painter, engineer and architect to the King". He had to flee Italy as patrons lost their stature at times. The Popes of his day were very influential and he was not their favourite.

Your question(s) are not "crystal" clear.

If you're asking if he was accepted by society at large and/or his peers during the time he lived, the answer would be yes.

He was from a noble but very poor family; so that he had to financially provide for himself.

During the course of his life, he became more and more successful and recognized for his great talent.

At his death, he lived in a villa provided by the king of France, and was very well provided for.

As to "was (he) ----- challenge(d) in the Renaissance?". I don't really understand what you're asking.

"What's the verdict?" On what? Him? Was he a great artist? Of course. Preeminent. There's no one comparable, in his particular achievements. The Mona Lisa; the Last Supper: icons. Even Michelangelo paid him homage.
