I got two tortoises yesterday, an adult male russian, only about 5 inches long, but pretty old. And a very small Herman's.

I've been doing a lot of research online before getting them, and pretty much burrowing and eating is about all they like to do...oh and mating.

I used to take care of a large collection of torts for a science center I worked for, and they didn't do much else either. Eat, fight, mate, burrow ( or wallow, the big sulcatas loved to squoosh around in the mud)

I named my "big" one Roy and my baby Nutmeg. I don't keep them together, because Roy could decapitate Nutmeg in a second if he got angry.

Sand is continuously a good determination, mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with backyard loam in case you'll discover it. Coconut coir works nicely, i have self assurance it is talked about as mattress-A-Beast. Peat moss is likewise good in spite of the indisputable fact that it is dusty. do not use newspaper, rabbit pellets, or alfalfa hay because it is too extreme in protein. so some distance as replacing it, i'd say a minimum of once each and every 2 weeks.

Names- I like naming my torts for places in their range. Look at a map for fun Russian city or park names.

Aquarium? Your torts are about 9-10" long total. They should be in a space with about 1,000 square inches, or about 8' x 8'- pretty dang big aquarium!

Fun things? If they have lots of space, they will explore, climb, dig, eat growing plants and grasses, etc.
