My boyfriend was shot during a home robbery. He was shot three times in the lower abdomen and had to be helicoptered to the hospital and had to have emergency surgery to remove the bullets, repair intestines, and stop the bleeding. He's had to go back to the hospital three times to have his stomach pumped because of problems caused by the wounds from the bullets and surgery. He is only 23 and does not have insureance for the bills. The rat bastard that shot him is in jail now trying to weasle his way out of prision and my boyfriend is getting thousands of dollars worth of medical bills added to his credit. We want to by a house together after we're married but I'm worried about how these bills are affecting his credit and our future plans for a home together. Is he going to be stuck with all these bills and negative affects on his credit because some crackhead was desperate to get some cash so he could have his fix?

I am sorry about what happened to your boyfriend, that's terrible!! I hope he's alright now. Unfortunately he will have to pay (unless like said above, you sue the Loser who shot him and can get any $$ out of Loserboy, or if you find some program some people referred to.

What I wanted to let you know is that you can make payment arrangements with the hospital. They won't expect you to pay thousands of dollars up front, so tell them what you can afford, and depending on the hospital and if it was affiliated with a church or not, they may be really good about working with you to pay a fairly small amount each month. If you did this, then at least his credit would stay intact so you 2 could buy a home. Otherwise the hospital bill will stay on his credit for at least 7 years and you'll have to hope they won't sue you. (Depending on how much the total bill is and how much money the hospital's accounting dept thinks you have will determine if they sue you or not. I got stuck with a $9,100 hospital bill once for pneumonia without insurance but the hospital didn't pursue me because I honestly did not have any money at all at the time. They didn't like the amount I could pay them each month so they dropped everything).

What happened to your boyfriend is awful.

Even though it does not sound 'fair' .. your boyfriend is responsible for his medical bills. Your boyfriend has to have the medical help .. and the medical help institutes have to have their bills paid.

Your boyfriend could check with the hospital, the DA, and other legal offices .. to see if there are any type of programs which he might qualify for ,, for medical assistance.

Most Counties have some sorty of indigent health programs .. you could also check on them.

Also - your boyfriend could bring legal action against the person who did this to him .. however, even if was awarded the monitarial funds .. it is probable that he will never see a cent of it.

Do a LOT of checking around, at many different places .. ask questions .. even at the hospitals .. you may be given some great information to help with the medical costs.

I wish you, and your boyfriend, the best.

He is responsible to pay for his medical care. He also has the right to sue the person who shot him although collection may be a problem. He should check into if there are some crime victims benefits available to him.

He can sue the guy that shot him for the medical bills. But if that guy can't or doesn't pay, then your bf will be responsible, and it will affect his credit.

He should see a lawyer immediately.

Depending on the state, there are programs available to crime victims to help pay their med bills. Contact you local state representative.
Here's pennsylvania's program. Since I don't know what state you are in, you;ll have to research this yourself.
Goodluck.

Pretty much.
However, he should check his homeowner's insurance (or renter's insurance) policy.
He should also get an attorney ASAP. If he waits too long, he won't be able to get ANYTHING.
