The rich write the rules. The wealthy are the policy makers. In the US 80 percent of millionaires are self made and only about 20 percent inherited wealth. Most millionaires in the US acquired there wealth by starting a business.

You can become well off working for a salary, but to become rich you need to be a superstar celebrity or work for yourself, that is own a business. In much of the world people are born in circumstances so poor that only extraordinary people can escape poverty. This is much less common reason in the US since WWII. More often than not, the really poor are poor because they messed up their life in some way or have bad health. However a large fraction of US workers who have not gone to college have low paying jobs , so it takes 2 incomes to support a family on a level that one income use to. Over the last 30 years unskilled workers have had to compete with labor from poor countries, because of trade and immigration.

The rich tend to be rich because they either inherited their wealth, or worked hard and made good decisions along the way, probably with luck on their side. The poor are often that way because they either did not work hard enough to achieve their goals, made some poor decisions or, more likely, met bad luck along the way and did not have the opportunities to succeed that others did. Often a child from a poorer family won't have the kind of educational opportunities a child of a richer family will, so unfortunately it can be a lot harder for them to get high qualifications and land good jobs.
How to get rich? A myriad of ways, but hard slog is an element of nearly all of them - unless you marry a rich man.
