They are embarrassed.
Maybe if they pretend it didn't happen then everyone else will beleive it too.

Way back in the day, it was polite to say 'excuse me' and then leave and do whatever you needed to do. But as time went on (and people became less concerned about their bodily functions and what people thought about it), the distance between the 'excuse me' and the act shortened to the point where now the excuse and the act are performed in the wrong order.
That is fact.

I think they are just hoping nobody heard.
And nobody will usually say "Did you just fart?"
It's disgusting!
MY stepmom's dad was visiting the other week and just let one rip on the couch, it actually scared me it was so loud and my dad and I both just looked at each other with this horrified look.
I'm not saying my family doesn't fart, I'm saying that If I can't get to the bathroom or a different room to let it out, I say excuse me, and then we all laugh about it!

Because if they do silent but deadly farts, then everyone in the room is lying on the ground and there is noone to say excuse me to

Because there are more animals than people on earth. And also because they have no excuse for doing it.

gross... you should def say excuse me.... it is prob part because they are embarassed and part because some people grew up in homes where it wasn't a big deal and their parents never told them the proper/polite thing to do is excuse yourself... if you must do it in front of others

i socialize with those who do say excuse me.........
the ones who don't, well, i usually giggle to myself over that.......it's hard not to when you have 8 year old kids who still think the word 'poop' is hilarious and the word 'fart' to good to pass up.....so now, i mostly see the humor in it and walk away chuckling..........
