I have a lot of relatives from southern states - Arkansan, Tennessee & Florida. IOn rare ocassions - I may adopt the term, but it's because it feels so natural. But once I get back home to Chicago - I get some twisted looks.

All the time.
I'm from Texas and didn't think I had an accent until a recent trip to California where some people were like "Oh my gosh! Are you from Texas or something!?"

Yes, and I am glad to see that you spell it correctly. It is an intrinsic part of my vocabulary; learned as I learned speech from my family and relatives, all from Texas, Tennessee, Alabama.
It amuses me when people, in particular Yankees, try to use it and apply it incorrectly, for instance; when referring to a singular person. They never seem to grasp that it's a plural designation.

As embarrassing as it might be, yes I occasionally use it.
Not surprisingly, I am from Alabama.
So, if you cannot handle the country grammar, stay out of the south. :)
