Under the feudal system, every man had his master.

The peasant farmer held his land from and owed allegiance and labor to the knight or squire in the manor house.

The squire, or knight owed allegiance and military service to his baron, from whom he held his lands.

The Baron owed allegiance and military service to a nobleman above him, or directly to the crown.

Society was highly stratified, with very little possibility of climbing from the lower classes to an upper class. There were a very few instances where a peasant man at arms won his knighly spurs and even a rank of nobility, but those occurances were very few and very far between. In general, a man born into a peasant family died a peasant. A member of the gentry rarely advanced to aristocracy or nobility. And even the most impoverished nobleman was ranked above the richest members of the gentry or peasantry.

I suppose that you could say that feudalism imposed a caste system not totally unlike the caste system as practiced in India in ancient times. However, the castes were not religiously ordained in Western Europe.

Put simply, feudalism is when the king is owed from his barons certain obligations, which include service and provision in time of war. If they were to pursue matters privately, the king did not interfere, as long as it did not get in the way of their obligations to him. The model in India is, or was, much the same.
