Fairy tales don't tell children dragons exist. They already know they exist. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed.

I agree, on several levels. One level is the allegorical...Children know the "dragons" (scary, unknown things) exist. Fairy tales show them that "dragons" (problems) can be killed (handled).
Then their is the fact that even if you NEVER mentioned monsters to a child they would make them up. One of my daughters was terrified of something she called "the plate monster" when she was a small child. In the only picture she ever drew of it it looked like a cross between a bear and a kitchen cupboard full of utensils. I had to give her a "magic" blanket to hide under ;-))
