When you hum a song, do you hum just the vocals or do you hum the background music as well?

I hum the vocals most of the time but sometimes I hum the background music 2.

When people hum, they generally hum the melody of the song. Many time the vocal line carries the melody but some times a lead guitar, trumpet, or other instrument holds the melody.

Sometimes, in rhythym and blues and funk, the rhythym section holds down a quasi melody with a great groove and so one would hum the bass part or something.

Really though, you could kinda hum anything you want because isn't it only meaningful like an inner monologue?

Vocals are most important but if there is a break in the song with just background music, then one will hum the background music.

Without even realizing, I will hum the vocals as well as the background music sometimes! :-)

i think vocals except where there are none and then obviously background music. I am a huge fan of 80's metal guitar solos though!

For me, it depends on the song. For example, when you sing the part:

You gotta fight! (dundun) For your right! (dundun) To partaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy!!!!

I hum the "dundun" parts, too. But if it's a song that doesn't have a part where it's only instrumental, I'll only do vocals.
