Why is it that most people who answer questions in this category rag on the person asking for homework help? Why do they say, do your own homework? What is the purpose of this category if not to help? What would be a more constructive way of answering these questions?

Since I'm probably one of those people you are complaining about, I'll answer.

This site is about HELPING with homework. Unfortunately, most people don't understand the difference between HELPING and DOING.

Helping is giving people the tools to do the work (in the case of math, explaining how a problem should be done -- but I rarely answer those). In many cases, the tools are already there -- in the textbook and/or class notes. The students are just too lazy to look them up.

When a student posts their homework up here verbatim, with no effort to show they've even tried, it's obvious they want us to DO the work for them. This is not HELPING. Remember, this is a HELP site, not a DO site. Sometimes they are blatant enough to ask us to write the essay/paper/whatever for them! In those cases, I point out that it is plagiarism and cheating to use what we have written, therefore helping the student by giving him or her advice on how to stay out of trouble.

Now, as to the reason I answer in the way that I do is that I hope, at least OCCASIONALLY, that a student will realize that he/she needs to do his/her own work! I fear for the future if students who are now cheating on their math and history try to become doctors or auto mechanics -- both of whom would hold my life (and yours) in their hands.

I freely do research and provide websites and or library references; I edit things that students have posted to help make them better. And I'll continue to "rag" on the kids who are too lazy to do their own work and are using this site instead of just cracking the books!

Thumbs down? Don't care.
No "best answer"? Don't care. Got enough useless points anyway.
Hopefully people will quit helping lazy students who make no effort! Do care .. and hope you do too!

Edit To JS: Reciprocated!

I do - I do try to help others with their homework, and I intentionally come to the Homework Help category with that purpose in mind. Yes, there are some valid criticisms of the way the people who ask the questions - I myself have seen question after question written in the History category that is obviously is for homework. I reminded them to ask their questions in THIS category - it has had little effect.

I have suggested that Yahoo! Answers create multiple History categories and a History Homework Help category - so far to no effect either. Those who cannot ask politely (that means writing more than just the question out of the book) and write a long list of questions, and say "I need the answers - hurry!" deserve to be told to do their own homework, or be reported.

I think the question here is: "What would be a more polite and efficient way for the students TO ASK their homework questions?"

Those who never ask themselves why they are getting the negative responses are failing to understand why they get the reactions they do.

No, Beth - I gave you a THUMBS UP.

When I see a record of questions, I won't reply them however will factor the individual within the course to uncover the solutions. The reason of homework is to gain knowledge of whatever to not have it performed for you. Same with math questions I will present an illustration and give an explanation for that, however simply giving an reply no. I am continuously suspicious of those who ask by means of declaring effortless or practical homework query. If it's effortless or comfortably why is it published right here? That continuously turns out to me to mention, I was once simply too lazy to do it myself.

Because so many people ask for answers to their homework questions. It's cheating. There's a big difference between asking someone how to do a certain type of math problem and asking them for the answer!
