the term came from something a good gardener does.. pinching the plants.... from the time a seed gets a few true leaves onward, a gardener pinches the newest growth out of the plant in order to cause it to 'bush out' and become stronger and fuller and bear more flowers/fruit... after he pinches out so many plants , between his thumb and and forefinger fingernails, the chlorophyll from the green plants stains his thumb and fingers pretty good.... hence, 'green thumb'.... and you don't have to be good at gardening to have one, just work with due diligence..... those who work in greenhouse/nursery situations may not know beans about gardening, they just do as instructed, as in pinching the plants, and they, too have green thumbs and forefingers!...like a pal of mine says, "the sign of a good gardener isn't a green thumb, it's brown knees....*smile*......
