I recently read that this season, David Ortiz was the seventh player to score a perfect 100 in elias' player rankings. I was wondering if anybody knows what the formula is that comes up with those rankings.

There are five categories, which vary depending on the position the player mainly occupies, and it references in-league rankings in some offensive and defensive stats (defense is ignored for DHs), or other stats for pitchers. It is used for ranking players for free agency compensation, and is not intended to be any sort of qualitative assessment of the players.

The stats that feed into the ranking formulae are taken from a two-year aggregate.

Don Mattingly was, IIRC, the first player to score 100.00.

A 100? That's ridiculous. His lack of fielding time decreases his chance of error. I'm sure if he played 100 games at first base with a fielding percentage of .690, he wouldn't be near 100.
