I really like denim for purses, if it is just for casual. I like to recycle old jeans that a zipper broke or holes in them, easy to take the back or a pant leg and make a purse, you can also do bead work on them or sew designs, or iron-ons, just let your imagination take over and create one of a kind!
I also like to use velvet. any kind of fabric would work, I have taken old ties, open them up, (undid the sewing with a ripper)
iron them flat then used the bottom of the tie as the top of the purse, with a button hole and cute button, put on a shoulder strap, also made out of a tie, (which most are silk) tiny but cute as all get-out. ends up to be about 4" by 4" add a little fringe and your ready!

A cotton blend is good because it's machine washable and dryable. You can also cut cotton blend squares like you would for a quilt and sew together and still wash and dry as above. It all depends on how much work you want to put into it.

I've got an idea how you can make a strong purse. Get an old pair of jeans that don't fit you any more And cut off the pant legs. sew the bottom part that was open and for the straps use the pant legs that you cut off. then decorate it any way you want to.

A cotten purse? I ahve never heard of that. Aren't purses these days usually made out of leather? I know my mum's is but I am a guy so I don't really know. Why don't you just buy a purse, won't it be cheaper and better than making one yourself?

Cotton would be fine, especially if you quilt it. You can also use upholstery fabric, canvas, or even lace, backed with muslin or something else.
