firstly heres what i have done many many times
but i contacted a local mowing service and went to the local recycleland (tip) to get cardboard and paper
layer by layer
- a light sprinly of dolomite and horse poo and chicken poo
- cardboard
- poor soil
- a layer of sugar cane mulch (dont buy it from bunnings go to a produce store and buy a bale should only cost $4-5
- some more soil
- vegescraps
- grass clippings
- soil
- i bucket of worms
- some more sugar cane mulch
- horse poo
- lastly a nice top layer of good soil or potting mix

this way you have the layered effect, you have good organic composition that will break down over time, you have a multilayered feeding system as the roots go down and the top section looks great.

to top it off plant a mix of deep rooted and narrow rooted veges corn, vs beens, v's carrots ect

look up the 'lasagna method' or lasagna gardens....those layers are good for a idea of what works .... we who have heavy clay soil don't use Peat Moss, but rather use leaves, shredded or not for some layers.... remember it's not how thick the layer is, it's just that the goodies are IN THERE.... it's an offshoot of 'sheet composting'... look that up, too, there's more info there....
