It really bothers me when I want to have a serious discussion and he either keeps reading the newspaper or working on the crossword puzzle. He says "I am listening." Or he jokes about things and doesn't take me seriously when I am trying to express something important to me.

Oh Welcome to the club! Almost 95% (and I'm being generous) of all husbands are like that. He loves you but men are big conversation holders. If it aint naked or holding a can of their favorite beverage then it is hard to get their attention! LOL

It is all about timing, and if your husband is anything like mine "I am listening" means just the opposite pretty much, it means "I know you're talking".

In my case I know there are only a few times a week when I can actually get his attention for serious discussions, which with us are mainly financial, so I wait for say Tuesday afternoon to come along and we discuss it at that time. On occassion one of us will remind the other of something or other we need to talk about on tuesday.
We have a systematic schedule for the "ugh" talks and it works great, you might consider trying it yourself.

I am not a guy but I know that this is part of the selective hearing process which all human beings are capable of.

The male of the species has elevated it to an art form all of it's own....

One of my friends jokes about having the most serious discussions with her boyfriend when she is driving on the highway in the fast lane.....guess it could be considered "entrapment," but sometimes a woman has to do what a woman has to do....

He, he have a good day....cheers.

You have to pay attention to timing. Maybe he has just come home and trying to unwind for a few minutes? It would help to say, "I need to talk about this, is this a good time? IF not then when because it is important to me to discuss this."

He may only need 5 minutes, but he just needs a little down or a warning first.

Just how it is for me, ain't marriage fun?

As you assert, solid & undesirable, precise & incorrect, those are recommendations of this textile international. previous this realm, they carry no meaning. each and every thing is a studying journey; solid, undesirable, or boring. yet in actual indisputable fact that the place this project is in touch, no one truly is familiar with the actual fact. we are all merely doing the superb we are in a position to to determine all of it out, so what precise do any persons could desire to belittle yet another's perspectives? this is exciting to share and detect - this is how we learn; despite if this is maximum relaxing whilst we do it with love and know for all factors of view. Talk to him at a different time, at night in bed, after he reads the paper or when you are with him in the car and you have his attention

It is the different communications styles of men and women. He really is listening to you, believe it or not. We learned this in one of my classes in college. Women look at each other when speaking, men don't. It is just their nature.
