Ask for a sport manicure.
They will trim and file your nails, short enough not to embarass you.
They will also buff and shine the nails, but not polish unless you ask for a regular manicure.
Why not get your toenails done, in black, silver, cobalt blue, or the colors of your favorite sports team?

My bf gets his nails done with me every so often and it really helps the appearance of his hands because he works outside!
The salon will probably cut your nails short and file them smooth, buff the surfaces, trim your cuticles, soak your hands and maybe get rid of the calluses on them (if you have calluses), then give you a nice massage up to your elbows. I would not ask for any polish or decoration unless you are metrosexual and want to put it on.
Good luck and have FUN! :)

Manicures for men don't normally include color. It's just basically polishing and cuticle maintenance. Unless, of course, you WANT color and designs....

If she gets her nails done, or has friends who get theirs done, then she already should know the answer to these questions.
