Athletic conferences are based on all the sport participates in. Generally major conferences such as the ACC participate in nearly every sport that the NCAA sanctions. Some schools choose to participate or not based on the sport (Norte Dame is in the Big East for every sport, but football).
The ACC is historically a conference whose major sport it is nationally known for is mens basketball. As we all know Duke has been dominant in this sport of the last decades. Only recently has the conference made a push to be known for football (adding Boston College, Miami, and Virginia Tech). In the long run the ACC may decide it wants to abandon its basketball roots, but for now it is still a basketball conference. This means Duke & North Carolina will be safe in the ACC for the forseeable future.
As far as Temple is concerned they are a member of the Atlantic 10 conference in mens basketball. Since they were not a full member of the Big East (having all sports in the same conference) it was much easier to remove them for just the one sport.

They can't. Look at the Duke basketball team. They are among the best teams in the country. Kicking Duke out means kicking Coach K and his Blue Devils out of the conference as well.

Because 20,000 still go to the Duke home games, unlike where 20 people go to Temple's home games. Duke has passion no matter what sport it is, and they'll continue to. Also, they haven't play that bad this year as previous years.

Because, We TARHEELS are still there to, make them look good. I love My TARHEELS and, there are some decent teams in the conference but, lets face it. the ACC, is a Basketball conference and, always will be. MARCH, is our time to let the BIG 10 and, all the power football conferences know how much they really suck!!!

no one outdoors of united statesa. seems to truly care or have an interest in handegg despite if the middle eastern countries do have soccer communities up and working and a historic tournament already got here approximately in 1998 whilst us of a performed Iran. as we talk this is lots greater probably that conflict would be accomplished in a soccer tournament than a handegg game.
