My son was also born at 34 weeks and was 4lbs. 9ozs. He made up for that quickly, but it was always funny to me the whole first year of his life, no matter how big he seemed, he was never above the 25th percentile for weight. However, if we played with his birthdate on the weight charts and put him on what should have been his birthday, he immediately jumped up to the 50th percentile. Weight was the only issue he ever seemed "behind" on. Milestones are so subjective within several months that I doubt that you will notice a difference to peers either at her "real"age or adjusted age. Of course watch and discuss any concerns with your doctor who will always let you know when you should be concerned. Just please do yourself a huge favor and take my advice as a mother of three[now 10, 7,and 3-last being my son I refer to]; do not waste much of your time or energy worrying about her accomplishment of milestones or weight, height, etc., they are all different. All my children did everything different ways and at different times-and the littlest did everything sooner and is by far the biggest. I hope this helps some. Congrats and best of luck to your family!

There is no right or wrong for the speed a baby does things. Just because she was born 6 weeks early does not necessarily mean she will be 6 weeks behind in her development.

Each baby develops on their own and at their own rate, I know this because all of my 4 babies were preemies ranging in gestation from 30 weeks to 34 weeks and my biggest was 6lbs 2 oz and my smallest was 3lbs 7.5 oz.
Each baby will grow and develop on their own schedule and whether your baby is 6 weeks behind or right in schedule your doctor and paediatrician will keep all of this info and will keep you informed if he thinks that there are any issues.
Don't be concerned right now with expectations for your new little bundle but take this time to enjoy her and treasure every moment as they grow up very fast.
Good Luck and Enjoy Her

Yes! My son was born 4 weeks premature, and was behind developmentally for the first few months. He caught up to where he should be with the milestones around 7 months. He is 9 months old now and 21 lbs!! Everyone says that he is going to be a Linebacker LOL! So they do catch up don't stress, just enjoy her!!!

"Adjusted age" is typically used when referring to a premie's age. This means the age the baby would be if s/he had been born full term. There is typically some lag time in developmental milestones because of the other physical development baby still had to do once s/he was born. Of course, just like with any baby, each develops on his/her own time table. Some babies catch up rather quickly to full-term babies, others take a little longer. Anytime you are concerned, you can talk to your pedi. :)

Hi, She will soon catch up to the other children, she is only 6 weeks behind at the moment but don't worry, It's a good question, and now i feel you will nurture your baby so she will not be behind other children. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.

yes, I have always heard that doctors of premature babies always compare milestones by going by what age your baby would be if they were full term. Developmentally your baby will be six weeks behind other babies who are "6 weeks" because technically your baby should just be born. I am sure after you get past the infant stage, develpomentally you will not be able to tell the difference, she may not crawl at 6 months because she is like a 4 month or walk by a year because she is like a 10 month old.....see??? Good Luck!!! and Congratulations on the birth of your baby!!!!!!!!!

A baby I know was born at 35 weeks and is more advanced than my baby born at 40 weeks. Perhaps initially, but they catch up so fast! If you're talking just weight wise, I am not sure about this.....Sorry I could not be of anymore help!

My god daughter was born at 34 weeks and her mum says that she definately 'woke up' at that point! She found her voice! Most slightly prem babies are said to catch up by age one, but Daisy was ahead of most right from the off so don't worry - all babies are different, she might be walking and talking before she's one like Daisy was!

i also had my son at 34wks,he weighed 6lb 3oz,i was told by proffessionals that he would be late at developing than other children his own age, but, he sat up at 7mths,crawled at 9mths,walked at 11mths, not at all was he behind, his elder sister didnt walk until she was 15mth. all children develop at different stages, as long as your daughter gets lots of interaction, then she will develop like any other child her age. good luck, and glad that your daughter is healthy,
