I need to do a research paper about free will but I need to limit the scope, does anyone have ideas for making the topic more specific?

You ask a great question. You need to make it REALLY narrow to get an effective answer.

One idea might be to compare amount of a particular crime type (you decide) between the USA where you can go to jail and a command economy government where you might be shot in the street. Problem: Getting 'reliable' statistics from such a country.

You could use something like wildlife reserves and the bears. I watched a show about Montana bear containment recently and they have decided to allow the bears to roam (free will) instead of containment (being land-caged) because their habitats are shrinking. There has been a Preservation Law that prevents ranchers from shooting them unless they trespass off the reserve. It sounds interesting and bear survival hangs in the balance. They are trying a new system...

I hope animals are acceptable instead of humans - for assignment. Not all these links are about bears...you may want to do another endangered species.

I think the first step would be to find out what does 'free will' mean to you. Free will means you can freely choose among all the options, what you can choose depends upon how you SEE things. This is often a topic in psychology courses, because it makes us question why humans are said to have free will and animals don't. What distinguishes humans from animals? Then there is the possibility that humans have free will, but do people really know how to use their will freely, or are they acting more out of their programming or conditioning? Thus, they are more like chained to the past and not free after all.

I think the most creative way to approach this is to find out - for yourself - what free will means to you. Do this by questioning yourself and your own nature - do you have free will? From this questioning process an idea should arise for you a more specific topic. Successful papers usually are that way because they are creative.

Part of free will is that you have creativity, you only have to use 'your will' to 'observe yourself' to find out about it.

Well... how about researching the topic of Free Will and the angels? To my understanding angels had Free Will before "The Fall" but then it was taken away from them, and they are now "locked into" the choice they made... thus we have Satan and the demons on one side and the "good" angels on the other. However, I have read some who say that the angels STILL HAVE Free Will, which frankly doesn't make sense to me. But that idea is out there.

Good Luck! Have a great day!
