Let me give you a variety. 1. Alice in Wonderland. This imay be considered a children's book, but it is a must read as the story of fantasy and wonder as well as humour is excellent. 2. House of sand and Fog. A very poignant story giving two sides of the same story -- the predicament of a former Iranian military officer and that of an average young American woman. It has poignan tragedy and is a statement on the strange system of today's world. 3. Rebeca bu Daphne du Mautier. A classic tale of suspense. No wonder Alfeed Hitchcock chose it for his movie. 4. Little Prince. This French novel, translated into English, is a delightful look at the world from a very different perspective. 5. Wuthering heights by Emily bronte. One of the best classics written with the haunting character of Heathcliff, the tortured soul, the anti-hero.

You could try The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, which is about a women suffering from a mental health disorder as well as being a semi-autobiography.
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt is a memoir and is very good, and One flew over the cuckoo's nest is somewhat about mental health.
Its a pity that you have a restriction on books written before 1960 coz that's when the best books were written. If you reconsider try books by Jane Austen, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Wurthering heights by Emily Bronte, and the Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.

Since I also read at an adult level when I was 13, I actually chose fiction, so even if you don't care much for fiction I suggest reading the Dragons of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey, because i love those books even now 7 years later. Then books by Piers Anthony because his books are pretty crazy but extremely enjoyable to read, then theres my all time favorite series The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series By Laurell K. Hamilton.
I know not exactly your genre or in your interest category but I swear by these books so why don't you take a peak at them just for the heck of it? ^.^ Piers Anthony books are more thought provoking, Laurell K. Hamilton books are mostly about crazy sex and a bad *** heroine who would rather shoot people then talk about the problems she has. And Anne McCaffrey's books are mostly about dragons and their people and the problems their colonies go through.

Take a look at Christopher Moore's stuff. His stories are hilarious, and he writes about a wide variety of people and topics, and finds fun ways to connect them. You say you like memoirs, so I recommend starting with "Lamb," and moving on to "The Stupidest Angel." "Lamb" covers the "missing years" of Jesus with all the fun bits left in, and "Angel" includes a former B-movie actress who keeps going on and off her meds, and when off tends to flash back to her movie character and run around with her gear.

if you not have not read Crime And Punishment by Dostoevsky this would be good, Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen if this is to your taste. Lady Chatterly's Lover Charlotte Bronte, The History Of George Thomas How He Conquered 3 thirds of The Punjab. Tyler Wat Rebellion, could read about The 1992 riots in LA, Mallory's King Arthur.

You should read John Grisham novels. They're usually pretty intense once you get into them, and not for young people.
