Well, the petstore informed you wrong, they can't live together
Unless you would have a huge very havily planted tank with a minimum of at least 50 gallons, then it can work
but anything less he will kill the females

When attempting to breed them, you need to condition them for at least 2 weeks on havy protein food, and once your female displays an eggspot and the male is building a bubblenest you can spawn them
the follwing article explains everything in detail with pics

Hope that helps
Good luck

Male bettas should never be kept with any other bettas, male or female.

To mate bettas, you need to condition them. Basically, this involves letting them see each other, but not touch each other, for about 20 minutes everyday for a few weeks. You will know when the conditioning period is over when you release the female into the breeding tank with the male and they do not fight.

However, this is only a temporary peace. The female must be removed once the eggs have been placed in the bubblenest, or else the aggression will continue.

I was once interested in breeding bettas too. My uncle used to breed them and he said the best way is to have two tanks side by side so the male can see the female. He will make a bubble nest for her to lay eggs in but they can't stay in the same tank. The male actually takes care of the eggs making sure they stay in the nest. After the fry are born then i think you take him out.

You cant house males and females together unless they are ready to breed. Which will be determined when the male blows a bubble nest at the top of the tank. At which point you introduce the female and watch to make sure they get along. If not he will kill her or she will kill him.

I wouldn't suggest breeding as it is hard. But whatever you choose good luck. Hope this information helps.

All the answers you received were good ones. I will also add it is not easy to breed Bettas. I resigned myself to just enjoying them swimming in their tanks with other breeds of tank mates :)

You keep the female in the male's tank for only an hour so they can mate. Any longer they will fight and die...

I wouldn't breed bettas if I were you. Its very hard and takes a lot of time and effort to keep them healthy. Where would you keep all of those fish anyway?
