I guess this isn't ALWAYS the case, as I've seen and met women who only wear their wedding rings but it's still usual to see two rings.
I don't understand why some women continue to wear their engagement rings after getting married.
Is there some kind of reason behind this or is it just one of those traditions that is followed but no one really knows why?

The engagement ring is usually the prettiest piece. And also cost more than a band. Wearing it is just appreciating it's beauty and grandeur. I'd hate to waste it in a fuzzy box at the bottom of my jewelry case.

In some European countries, the wedding ring is the same as the engagement ring and changes its status through engraving and the change of the hand on which to wear it. If the wedding ring is different from the engagement ring, the question whether or not the engagement ring should be worn during the ceremony leaves a few options. The bride may wear it on her left ring finger and have the groom put the wedding band over it. She may also wear it on her right ring finger. The bride may also continue wearing the rings on different hands after the wedding – this may prevent the engagement ring from scratching and scuffing. Another option is to have the main bridesmaid keep the ring during the ceremony – there are a variety ways to keep it: in a pouch, on a plate, etc. After the ceremony, the ring can be placed back on either the left or the right hand.

Many times, the engagement ring and wedding band are bought as a set, so that they can be worn together. Otherwise, I don't know why, but perhaps they want to because both are symbolic of a very special time of their life. Why should she only get to wear an engagement ring for the time between engagement and marriage, espeically since it tends to be an expensive piece of jewelry, relegating it to some box somewhere after the wedding?

The diamond one is an engagment ring, while the band is the wedding band- given during the ceremony. Also, some people get an anniversary ring.

People keep the engagment ring as a gift- they want to remember the moment.

I think it is just a personal preference, some women think their engagement ring is pretty with the wedding band, in fact many wedding sets are sold that way, the engagement ring and the wedding ring together....so maybe it's the jewelers that started it off.

Why do people wear rings, they hold meaning or symbolize situations for the wearer and for others. The engagement and wedding ring are important to women as they symbolize their achievement in finding a husband . Also rings symbolize a 'bond' or commitment to a social union.

I find less easy to understand why some men wear wedding rings and some dont ?

The engagement ring represents the promise of marriage and the band the fulfilment of that promise. Together they signify a greater bond and sense of pride. It was the first step in the proclamation of your love and commitment to each other before you went in front of your peers to publicly announce the love you feel for each other and that you want to spend the rest of your life together. The band represents a continuous love that is non-ending and encircles you forever. The moment you are asked for your hand in marriage that is a moment that is unique almost above all others. Marriage is a total and complete commitment which is the first step to becoming one . The ring should be on your finger as it is the beginning .

I have my wedding ring near nearest to my heart and my engagement ring on the outside. Really though my rings are an heirloom. The wedding ring is from my grandmother on my dad's side, and the engagement ring is from my grandma/ great grandma on my mother's side. We didn't have to spend a small fortune on rings. I think there were around $200 to get fixed and made into a set. It means more to me since they are heirlooms. I wouldn't change it or rather have a new highly expensive ring.

The engagement ring, it's special. Why wouldn't you want to wear it?

A lot of wedding bands are designed to fit around an engagement ring. You're right though, that's been more of a recent trend, I think.

Sometimes the engagement rings are part of a set that includes the engagement ring and the wedding band. The two put together form a totally different ring then when they are worn separate.
