Fingernails and toenails are made of a tough protein called keratin and are produced from living skin cells in the fingers and toes.
The primary component of hair fiber is keratin which is the same protein that make up nails.

First of all it's not minerals beacuse minerals are not living.
Hair and nails are made of dead cells, but dead cells contain various proteins that provide structure.

Well hair if protein but notice that it has no feelings like when you cut it. Your nails as well don't hurt unless you don't cut them right and then it is the LIVE parts of the toes or fingers that have the feelings of pain.
