I would join a group, like a book club or a wine club; take a class as another poster recommended. If you're religious, join a church and become involved there. You could also volunteer. www.charityvillage.com can help you find somewhere in your area that could use your help.

I think the key is to try new things that you might be interested to find out about yourself. Rather than joining with the intention to make a new best friend (which can put too much pressure on you), join for the experience. As you get comfortable I'm sure you'll start making friends. Good luck!

Same for me, I got rid of all my friends, it has not been for as long as you have, but it's been quite a while. I did it little by little with out not even knowing it, but I did. You know something? I feel much better now, I really did not need any of them. My life is much happier now, I know a lot of people, but do not consider them friends. Friends come and go. The so called friends I had were not friends at all. My friends now , are my family. I like who I am now, before it was all a mess... If you want to make friends, make sure you choose well. You can consider me here a friend. I'm always here, but I do not call or send anyone e-mail. You do know who u are. Hope to see you here again.. Join the crowd...

Try things that sound interesting and then you'll meet people already doing the same thing.
Join a bowling league for instance, or get a golf club membership.
If you like reading or stamp collecting, there are clubs all over the place that do those sorts of things.
Take a class at the local community college. You don't need a major. Just take Spanish or horticulture or something that sounds fun to you.

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!
Go to your local hot spot and start striking up converstations with friendly people. Go to large group functions to meet people. Check out 'Meet in' online for local gatherings. Look for wine tastings, beer fests, public lectures, etc.
GET OUT!
