The world was convinced that Iraq had WMDs and Iraq had become used to the world not acting on their snubbing of UN resolutions. The Bush administration grew tired of this inaction and coordinated an anti Iraq alliance to enforce the UN resolutions whether the UN liked it or not then made demands while the US Congress gave the President permission to wage war there. Sadam believed that the USA would never attack a secular Islamic regime that bordered on Iran and feared Iran more then he did a US invasion so he did nothing to convince the world that he did not have WMDs in an attempt to bluff Iran. He was wrong and the US and allies invaded and won the war in three weeks. As is usually the case, miscalculation caused the war.
The current mess is nation building and nobody seemed to have an idea on how to do this nor were serious plans made plus the SecDef especially ignored experts from RAND who stated many more troops would be needed in the effort. Basically the military was large enough to win a minor war against a third world nation but way too small, thanks in no small part to the mere 2% GNP budgeted to defense by the Clinton administration, to effectively rebuild a nation who's infrastructure was blown away. Eventually, the foreign Islamic fighters succeeded in causing the Iraqi sects to war on each other although it appears that the Iraqi people are tired of their interference now.
That is the story in a nutshell.

The US people and Congress were spoon fed lies by an administration hellbent on starting a war they knew would not end for many years... they took faulty intelligence and twisted it into a case for war and they used 9/11 as a political tool to convince a reeling nation that Iraq was a threat to America when it clearly was not.
The people who carried out 9/11 were Saudis, not Iraqis... but the Saudis are our friends, we are all told. It's really all about the oil, my friends, and right now the American people are owned by it.
LOL at the nut who blames the Clinton admin. for the Iraq failure.... how about blaming a president who cuts taxes and spends instead?

George Bush's administration decided to convince Congress and the American people that Saddam Hussein had WMDs (weapons of mass destruction), and at the same time inferred that Iraq was funding Al Queda. Congress funded his plan, and VIOLA! the United States attacked Baghdad.
Now, the Civil War we initiated and the gathering of all the rebels to fight us, and several billion dollars later, we have this fine mess on our hands while (an alive and apparently healthy) Bin Laden keeps making his tapes to show our country as fools.
