When I say "get by" I mean be able to have a functioning car (not a great one, but not a pinto either), rent an ordinary apartment room, and buy food. Basically, the basics any person would need. Ipods, cellphones, and other gadgets are unnecessary.

So what's the calculation in your state? 25-30-40 grand a year?

I heard about a year ago the national average was $25,000 for a single person and like $36,000 for married and two children.

Try living on Social Security that is half that of a single person! it is very difficult to do.

25K maybe less if you are single. Washington State you can find a place to live with a roommate for 300-400 a month and if your car is paid for save $100 a month for future replacement and repairs. Maybe 100 a month for car insurance maybe less. Assuming medical is paid by employer.
Actually you can be rich on 25-30K a year if you have a paid off house and no car payment or other payments on things.
I get 50K but save 25K for retirement and still have house payments live pretty well.
