theres been a few questions about fireworks going off tonight and some of you seem confused as to why.every year round this time in england we celebrate bonfire night because a couple of hundred years ago guy fawkes failed to blow up parliament why we celebrate that i dont know but there you go hope that clears it up for you feel free to make comments it is supposed to be a question after all.

It is because Guy (Guido) Fawkes was part of a Catholic group who intended to kill King James 1. The Protestant government were not amused and Fawkes and his co-conspirators were hung drawn and quartered. His failure is still a cause for celebration in Protestant England.

To the yank below: I think we ought to celebrate the time we burnt the White house down in the war of 1812 !

yes, I'm American....thanks for the info....I actually didn't notice any questions about fireworks yet.....
But isn't it crazy sometimes the things governments will celebrate? I guess they are happy Parliament is still standing.

I knew that since I was a little kid. It is in every history book since 1605. I have a family member who was born on Nov 5th and am getting him a birthday T-shirt that says "Remember the 5th of November" with a bomb cartoon.
