Insanity is subjective. The word insanity really isn't used anymore, in the same way crazy isn't used either.

You can go "insane" from Chinese water torture (nurture). You can have a psychotic break due to a stress-er which is nurture in the sense that most often it comes from an outside stimuli. However, there are many people that believe they were "wired" for that possibility to begin with (nature).

If you want Websters definition of insanity go look it up. If you want to learn about psychological issues surf the web.

most likely nurture, as in the case of an overprotective parent cutting off their connection to the real world by methods such as not letting them out at all, possibly resulting in them resorting to making their own 'imaginary' friends - insanity. this can sometimes cause suicidal tendencies.

nature-.....mmmm. is there actually a genetic deficiency that causes insanity in some people? very rarely the case.

Some good sources to check are www.psychologytoday.com, www.webmd.com and your local library for more on the subject. In my personal opinion (as a psychology major), I believe that if someone experiences something stressful or traumatic, it can "send them over the edge," and in that case it could be considered nurture. However, lesions in certain parts of the brain, or out-and-out brain damage can also cause "insanity." Since insanity is often only used in legal terms, you may want to research terms such as deviant behavior, psychosis, schizophrenia and other mood disorders to start with.

I think it can be caused by both. You can be biological deficit that causes insanity or you could be normal and through various methods, like being locked up in a dark cell without human contact for years, you could become insane.

I think it is 25% nature and 75% nurture. I have a niece who is adopted, and she still has episodes of her mothers mental illness, but love and consistency really help.
