One great way to figure this out is by way of proof, its really simple =)
Assume 5/8 = 3/8
Multiply both sides by 8: 8 x 5/8 = 8 x 3/8
You can now cancel out the 8: 5=3
But you know that 5 doesn't equal 3, in fact its greater than 3. So you know the left side is greater than the right side, and 5/8 is greater than 3/8.
To figure this out without a proof, think of it like this:
if there is 8 people in your class and I make a group of 5 people out of that 8 and a group of 3 people of that 8, which group is bigger?
