Pretty much everything is a product of human experience and imagination. I think that in human beings there are two poles at war with each other: the rational and the mystical. Both are necessary and in fact, most likely can't exist without the other. Imagination, beauty, love, intuition belong to the mystical side -- the side that craves mystery and wonder and always "feels" there is something more. Logic and linear thinking are the products of the other pole. Both are necessary.
Religion I think often shows itself because of the symbol-making faculty in man, the unconscious mind that craves mystery, seeks to acknowledge the miracle of existence and to transcend whatever limits we currently have. The rational mixes with this to form laws, rules and doctrines. The two often conflict with each other. Now we are split quite often with one side warring against the other. The religious, mystical side seems to lose ground to the logical because it by its very nature, cannot be pinned down and reasoned with. Then the mind gets tired of living in a technological wonderland combined with a spiritual desert, and the mystical reasserts itself. Neither will ever be done away with because they are both expressions of who we are and interpretations of our experience, but differing perspectives.

Not entirely.
Super-universal intelligences most likely exits according to what I know of cosmology and cybernetics. If such entities anted us to believe in them they have had something to do with religion.
Most of the things we believe about gods are culturally imposed on us by organized religions, and may have noting to do with the truth or falsity f the existence of God

Religion is a product of man trying to worship God on our own terms, not the terms God set out for us.
When we go to God we go to God on His terms, otherwise we just end up with a religion. Any denomination. If it isn't on God's terms then it ends up as a religion.

Religion is simply a lie about God. No more No less.
People like to project their insecurities on to God because it makes them comfortable to think that God hates who they hate and loves in a miserly fashion just as they do. The hate the idea of the real unconditionally loving God because they can't stand the idea that God could love someone that they don't care for.
So they create a silly little small g god in their own image and likeness.
Love and blessings Don

No. Religious adepts have tried to explain their intuited understanding of being/reality. Religion is a product of misunderstanding, misinterpretation and projection.

It is the product of Fear. Specifically the fear of death. Especially for those who have chosen to live meaningless lives. If they are "people of faith", then why are they scared of everyone else's freedom?
