I have had glowlights and firelights, and neither schooled with my neons. I've never had any separate species school together. However, I have had a single neon and a single firelight, survivors of ick, live for two years by themselves until I could get them more same-specied buddies (tank was too full, long story). They didn't school, but never looked depressed or unhealthy either. I know every pet/fish store will tell you that you need at least 3 of each kind of tetra, but I personally have not found that to be true.

The only species that will consistently school with Neons are other Neons. Fish will not go out of their species to school for more than a couple of minutes. If you want a separate school and you have the room for it, go for it, but don't expect the schools to swim together. Keep in mind that schools should consist of at least 5+ fish of the same species.

I have kept tetras of all sorts but they never school together. It kind of reminded me of the segregation in the 1950's . All my neon's would swim with the neons and my black tetras would swim together.
