Phenolphthalein (FEE-nol-THAL-een) is an indicator, which means that it changes color depending on whether the water solution is acid or base. It is red in bases and colorless (water-white) in acids. In particular, it changes from colorless to red over a pH range beginning at 8 and ending at 10.
