I would like a type of fish that can live great in amll - medium groups of five or six or so and are virtually easy to care for. I DO NOT want to pay an arm and a leg for my fish though! :)

All the fish mentioned by the others are great but how about some barbs, especially Tiger, Rosy, or Golden barbs.

Diamond tetras, black skirt tetras, gold skirt tetras, corydoras, rubber-nosed plecos, and swordtails are some pretty decent beginner fish (not referring to you or anyone else as a beginner, though). They are pretty hardy and easy to care for. And did I mention cheap? :)
