I am going back to college after a long time off and am switching my major. In my new major in need to take calculus. I have only taken"liberal arts" type math classes in college and have not taken algebra. I am currentley studying what i believe to be algebra 1 out of a book called teach yourself algebra. I know i am not ready to take calculus when i start school next semester and would like to take precalculus. I would rather not have to take algebra 2 because from what I see precalculus is a review of algebra plus trig. Do I absolutley need algebra 2 before I take precalculus? I feel I am pretty good at learning math, I enjoy it and I will have a lot of time to study. I would like some opinions on this.

I suggest you go to the college bookstore and look at the textbooks. If they look really easy or overwhelming, then you should consider stepping forward/back a step.

The usual math sequence is algebra I, geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calc, then calculus I.
(some schools rename things as "analysis" or some thing else)

You should take the algebra 2 class. It will be worth it once you get to pre-calculus. Alot of the things that you do in the algebra classes comes back up in calculus, so it pays to be proficient at all levels of algebra.

Precalculus involves learning about all of the different types of functions. There is absolutly no calculus in precalculus. Just make sure you have a good idea of what a function is and how to isolate variables in polynomials, rational, exponential and logarithmic equations.

I think you need to take algebra 2 before precalculus.
