Carrying a gun will get you arrested. Many Japanese have never even held a gun in their hand. Japan has the lowest crime rate in Asia. You don't need to carry anything for "protection". Detroit has a higher crime rate than the whole country of Japan.

Japan has a low crime rate. They arrest and jail people accused of a crime, you stay in jail until your trial and the conviction rate is over 80%.
Their justice system is not like other countries, so they do not have the problem with repeat offenders at least not commiting another crime while awaiting trial.
There are guns in Japan, but the laws agains gun ownership are very strick so most criminals do not risk the additional charges of a gun related crime.
You can not carry a weapon, and do not need one for protection.

Carrying fire arms is illegal in Japan for the average citizen, there are also tight laws on swords and carrying knives around. Japan has a pretty low crime rate when compared to other countries.
The only people who usually shoot each other up are the Yakuza (Japanese Mafia) and sometimes the Police.
So unless you plan on joining the mafia or messing with their "business" then you have generally nothing to worry about as a average tourist. Not to say that crime doesn't happen, but its not at a point where you need personal defensive items.

No, it's not too bad for crime in Japan. There's a lot of pervs who bother the girls on the trains and such. I imagine there's a lot of crime that's unreported. University guys gang-bang girls and seem to get away with. If they don't get away with it they get two years or something lame like that. Then there's oyajiyabure where young people go beat up old men in order to show their contempt for society. There's maniacs on motorbikes who make noise at all hours. I never felt the need to be armed. Overall there's not a lot of crime in Japan. The Yakuza certainly don't have the power they once had. Since company meetings have all been held on the same day the corporate extortionists can't get around enough to extort money from them all. Probably the worst crime in Japan is the taxpayer's money paying for every river and beach in the country to be covered in concrete.

Absolutely not!
Japan is very safe, and besides even Japanese criminals avoid dealing with foreigners. That doesn't mean that some ugly crimes don't exist, but certainly not that you have to carry weapons.
