Yes it is possible and it does happen, just not that often.

I would like to remind people that said no that there are Asian species of elephant and rhinos as well as just your African. Asian elephants can be far smaller and their rhinos are nothing but tanks.

Like I said, though fighting between the species can be a regular thing, death tends to be a bit more rare. Nonetheless it does happen.

I once saw the aftermath of a young calf that had been gored and trampled to death by a rhino. Not a pretty thing.

I always like "Coyote's" answers, and I agree that Asian species are different, but I have to disagree here. Any African Species of Rhino is no match for a full grown bull African Elephant. Despite the size difference, the greater aggression from the elephant would far out weigh any encounter. Being that the Rhino is basically a peaceful creature and will not attack unless they, or their young, are seriously threatened, I think it would probably retreat. Elephants, on the other hand, can be very aggressive, without even being provoked.

I think that intelligence comes into play here. A Rhino has the smarts of a cow, whereas the Elephant is very intelligent and has the knowing as to when danger is present and will react accordingly. The Rhino is reactive, while the Elephant is proactive. That is the main difference between these two magnificent creatures.

That is my view!!!!

No offense "Coyote" I still respect your answers!!!!

There was a group of elephants where all the adults were killed. Some of the young ones didn't know better and attacked a rhino. The rhino injured the elephant. It could have cause a lethal wound but a large elephant could kill the rhino if they got into a fight.

Anything is possible.

It really depends on the conditions of the encounter, If the conditions were right a rhino could kill an elephant and the reverse is true for a elephant. Look at it this way If a human was just by him/her self against and elephant I would say your pretty screwed but if that human had the appropriate weapon then I would say the elephant is screwed.

I think in the process they will kill each other. The rhino might stab and injure the elephant but i think the elephant would kill the rhino first.

Several orphan elephants were transferred to 2 parks in South Africa in the 90's. After growing up and in the rut, they killed 36 endangered rhinos. The killings stopped in one park after 6 full size bull elephants were transferred to one park. The other park has asked for 10 full sized bull elephants to do the same thing there.

The only single animal in Africa that kill a full sized bull elephant in Africa in another bigger elephant or man.

well of course a rhino "could" kill an elephant, it depends on the circumstances ^ repeat of the person above me, ^ probably not though.

I don't think they tend to get into fights so no one knows.

Rhinos (35 mph) and elephants (12 mph) both could run faster than a person so don't let that bulk fool you.
