I personally believe, who gives a f*** about that s***. It is a waste of time, gossip I guess rules in our society.

I suppose we see people living the American dream and we all get jealous. We all want to bask in the glory that is success. I am sure the celebrities would rather we leave them alone (although most crave that attention).
In my opinion, I really don't care what they do as long as:
1) They aren't above the law
2) No one gets hurt
3) They continue doing whatever made them famous in the first place (movies, TV etc)
I mean, I personally love Weird Al Yankovic and know quite a bit about him. Sure I was sad when his parents died, but he is, in my mind, just an artist that I respect, nothing more.
Then again, the majority of Americans see these popular people and want to emulate them in hopes be being like them. (SEE: American Idol)

They are glamorized by the media and live by a means in which the average American will never come close to experiencing. I have some celebrities that I absolutely adore but they are also never in the news or tabloids for anything negative.(John Travolta- my husband in my head haha) America loves entertainment and we over pay to be entertained.

You know, I think of myself as a pretty smart person who tries to spend time on what's important in life... but oddly enough, I am strangely attracted to what's going on in the life of a celebrity.
Some people are interested in celebrities' lives because they completely want to copy them. But, I think most people are in my boat, mysteriously attracted to celebrities' lives. And, some people will spend more time on it than others. (e.g. read more pop magazines, watch more Glenn Beck)
Couple possible reasons why:
-We want to live the american dream with them. (as previous guy said)
-We want to see what successful people do.
-Also, we want to see them fail because we are jealous of their success.
-They are like heroes for us. So we want them to be super-human on one hand (beauty, great personality) and human on the other (divorce, failure, ugliness, bankruptcy)
