All the big monster megabanks are of the same ilk.

Your best choice for banking is a credit union. Mine charges me nothing for overdrafts and no late fees on my credit card if I'm less then 5 days late. After 5 days late, I think they charge me $3. Most banks charge at least $29 for each of these.

They also charge lower rates on auto loans and home equity loans, and less interest on credit cards.

Well most banks have pretty high NSF fees these days which is why you have to be very careful not to bounce checks. If the fee was charged due to an error you didn't make, you should discuss it with the bank and try to get it reversed.

Many of my students bank with Wachovia and are happy with them.

I've been with Bank of America for 10 years and never had a problem. They have pretty good customer service whenever I have had to call in to ask a question.

Look into smaller local banks, where they tend to actually care about their customers, and not spend the day thinking up new ways of how to come up with new methods of squeezing more blood out of their clients.
