How can you tell if an average cell is living?

Evidence that cells are living:
1. Some cells have their cytoplasm constantly moving around inside in a motion called cytoplasmic streaming.
2. Some cells have visible functions: cilia or flagella moving, contractile vacuole expanding and emptying, food vacuoles forming, and so on.
3. Living cells exchange gases with the environment, so you could add an indicator that would show evidence of carbon dioxide being absorbed or released.
