My friend and I are debating which one to go with. She already has a daughter named Emily and is leery about having two children with the same initial as a first name, which I'm trying to convince her there's nothing wrong with that. Also we're trying to think of some good nicknames. Any suggestions?

Tell her to go with Evangeline. I love that name, and it's really not a big deal if both daughters have the same first initial. If she names her Avangeline, it will probably get misspelled often. Nicknames: Evie, Evan (i know a girl with this name)

Evangeline...That is the proper spelling. I dont think it is a problem having both E names...It's not like the rhyme or anything. No one will even notice, especially not once she is grown. If you go with Avangeline she will have to explain the unusual spelling for the rest of her life.

Angie seems like a good nickname for Evangeline.

I wouldn't know how to pronounce Avangeline. If it's not spelled the usual way, I'd expect the parents to change the E to an A for pronunciation reasons.

The poem is beautiful - the way it's normally spelled is literary and poetic, whereas Avangeline - it just doesn't look right to me. I keep thinking it says avant, or avengers, or random words like that.

I personally like Evangeline better... when I look at Avangeline I want to pronounce it as if it started with the name Ava. But my one friend spells her name Evangelynn but still pronounced the same way :]

There's nothing wrong with having multiple children with names starting with the same letter.
The only problem would be, if she has yet another, and used the same letter with the first two, she will need to keep up with the tradition, and use the "e" on her third as well=)
That way her youngest won't feel left out.

If you choose "Avangeline"
Ava
Avie
Angie
Vangie
Eline
Linie (leenie)

If you choose "Evangeline"
Eva
Evie
Vangie
Angie
Eline
Linie

Good luck and congratulations to your friend!

Evangeline! Love it! Both of my children have names that begin with the same letter and I am currently hunting for a third one. Sometimes I call them the wrong name when I am in a hurry or frustrated but I feel as though I would do that no matter what their names started with. Don't let the beginning letter discourage her from what she likes. Congrats to her!

I really think that she should go with Evangeline. It's ok that both her daughter's will have E names, because both names are pretty and not too similar. Avangeline is nice, but seems too trendy to me, because Ava is so popular, it just seems like she wanted to make it longer.

nicknames:
Evie
Eva
Eve
Angel
Angelina
Ange
Angie
Angela
Lina
Leelee
Lily

Good luck to your and your daughter with name choice! It can be tough!

Avangeline...who wouldn't be able to pronounce that?!? Plus Evangeline seems so old...not good old but just plain old...plus it reminds me of a television evangelist. Also, Avangeline seems a lot more feminine to me.

I'd use Evangeline.

She's right to hesitate, but these two names are very different. Emily and Ella would be too close, but Evangeline is distict.

Nicknames - Eva, Evie, Vangie, Angie, Lina, Van.
