How about: A group (association) of lawyers that work together and share the money that they make (profits) and the costs (expenses) based on each lawyer's share in the firm. The lawyers often work together and practice the same areas of law (like criminal defense, civil litigation, etc.).

Tell the child that law is like sport: someone wins and someone loses, and just occasionally they draw!

A law firm plays a game on behalf of a goodie or a baddie in a room surrounded by people who consult very dusty books where stories are told about naughty people doing similar things to those done by the man/lady in chains in the big room.

Twelve people (a jury) are chosen, to decide what happens to the pereson in the chains, because a policeman has said they might have been naughty.

The men on the goodies side , and then the ones on the baddies side take it in turns to ask everybody very awkward questions. These people asking the questions are from LAW FIRMS.

If the twelve people say the supposedly "naughty person" is guilty, then the baddie's team have lost and the goodie's team have won.

Either way, the goodie's and the baddie's teams all get loads of money from somewhere or other, and all go out and get steaming drunk whilst discussing everything which has gone on, in spite of the judge saying they can't do such a thing.

Go on, then - YOU explain it!"

First he has to know what a lawyer does. A lawyer basically stands up for a person.

It is like in school when you get in a fight and have to go to the principal's office. The parents get called in. The parents can be like lawyers because they may stand up for their children in front of the principal.

A law firm is a business where lawyers figure out how to help people and stand up for them. Law firms do all kinds of things for all kinds of people with all kinds of problems.

I guess you explain that there are regulations on how we live, just as you have rules in your house and family. When those rules are broken then someone has to enforce the rules namely Mom and/or Dad.

In the grown up world, If there is a dispute about the rules/laws, then people who are trained in the laws present both side of the problem. And I don't know if you want to get in to the jury thing or the witness thing or just skip on.

Then it can be determined who gets the spanking. In the big people world, those people are called lawyers and when you firmly stick them all together. It is called a law firm ....period.

You have to start with taking the i-pod out of his ears, turn off the cell, try to get the game controls out of his hands, and turn off the TV. Then, ask him to sit down and, with all seriousness, tell him that a law firm is a group of attorneys who perform their jobs in an office, usually in a nice building.

Sorry...my grandson is a lawyer in Brentwood, CA. He puts in a lot of hours...billable hours. His work is mostly defending companies against insurance fraud. But, the firm has many lawyers who work in many fields.

Wikepedia doesn't have a child's version.
Rules are what people have to follow in school. Laws are what grownups have to follow. Lawyers are people that work with other people about understanding laws, and help them in court.
No, it isn't hard to explain. What makes me wonder is why you had to ask!
