An electricity meter makes a very loud humming noise at night. It is positioned within the communal area in a small block of flats and there seems to be some sort of timer attached to the meter. Any ideas why it is making such a loud noise and what the timer is for; and what can be done?

Try tapping the meter or timer, it may stop humming but will probably start again. Either or both could be humming, possibly a loose coil, maybe needs fixed tighter to the backboard. The timer is for stair lights or door entry system.

Umm, do you have economy 7? In our block of flats when someone switches on a light in the communal hall way the timer whirs for 2 minutes until it switches off, so could it be the lighting? Ask your landlord if you're renting.

I'd get in touch with the landlord and if there is no luck there I would ring the electricity people up as the meter belongs to the electric people not the landlord.

PHONE YOUR ELECTRIC SUPPLYER, THEY WILL LOOK AT IT / CHANGE IT FREE OF CHARGE.
GO FOR A DIGITAL ONE IF AVAILABLE.
THE BIG TIMER SOUNDS LIKE THE ECONOMY SEVEN TIMER SWITCH (DOES ANYBODY HAVE ELECTRIC STORAGE HEATERS?).
