It really depends on the secret, and how many secrets you are keeping. If you were keeping a secret about a murder, or an illicit affair, or that you committed a felony, that would create constant anxiety and alienation. You would be afraid of being discovered, and it would affect how close you allow yourself to be to others. You would walk around nervously waiting to be caught. If you were harboring one terrible secret or several very troubling secrets, it could ruin you life.

On the other hand, some secrets are benign and appropriate, e.g. what you might write in a diary, or where you keep a hidden key, etc. These secrets would have no effect on your life, and are useful. But I suspect that these are not the secrets you are referring to!

Of course they can be damage people or also help people. We need to be careful, we can't say the secrets to any person until we know deeply that person. I have been in serious and problematical situations because i told a friend a secret and he told everyone.

I give this example and secret because it has been part of my past and nobody can damage me anymore with it.

I was in secundary school and i had a friend, Fernando, who liked to steal things, once we were outside the classroom, where the bags were because we couldn't let the bags inside the classroom or in lockers, that doesn't exist here in Mexico and he tried to take a CD away of Cardigans from one classmate, i told that to a friend as a secret, but he told the classmate of the CD and he told the principal that me and my friend stole his CD and we were suspended for that and my friend who likes to take others' things, he didn't take anything this time.

So, be careful who ya tell things!!!

I've needed to keep a lot of secrets, for a lot of years, and for a lot of people. For awhile, it was my job to keep the secrets of others.

It can be stressful...always having to be on your guard...as to not say something you shouldn't. I have slipped some out at weak or tired moments, but fortunately they were my own secrets--not those someone else trusted me with.

Recently on "The Today Show" they said how women who kept secrets were a good percentage more likely to get heart disease due to the fact that holding secrets in causes a good bet of stress, while letting them out releases stress and, (as long as you don't get taunted,) releases stress. So, its really your decision as to what you wish to tell, and what to conceal.
