Please be honest!! Do you believe Americans who come to visit Jamaica are well off?? Is it just me or do you feel it's offensive when you're constantly being asked for money, IPODS, or MP3 Players?? I'm not trying to say this is the case for most or all Jamaicans- I'm just trying to understand some people's reasoning for what they do or say!

Dude!!! Not being racist! When I meet anyone I don't assume anything! The idea came about after the 3 rd person asked me for something in a few weeks time... I left like they were being racist or biased just because I'm American and assumed I had the funds to give these things- I was very offended...... And I don't understand patois that well but that first guy didn't answer my question- I'm assuming you said something along the lines of that's just the way is it- or a guy gotta do what I guy gotta to do?

...I'm a bit confused about your question. from what i understand, you're saying you visited Jamaica, and had Jamaicans constantly ask you for money and IPODS?
that sounds strange...where did you stay?
i know that locals in the resort areas can be more than annoying and often pester visitors for money or to buy things from them....but "NO" means no in any language, so you really shouldn't feel pressured to give away things if you don't want to. But you have to understand that these people are trying to make a living. That's the 'reasoning' behind their actions...like anybody else they have to eat food.
You will find people trying to capitalize on tourists anywhere in the world. Best thing for you to do is not walk around with a bag of cash, and be firm (not disrespectful) in your refusals.
I sincerely hope that is not your opinion of all Jamaicans...it's a bit irritating when person use the bad experiences they have in tourist towns to judge Jamaicans on a whole...very unfair!

As an American citizen of Jamaican descent I can tell you that not all Jamaicans are like this. However there are expectations, especially in touristy areas. This is not exclusive of Jamaica though. Encounter some of the gypsies in Rome, they are ruthless, and get mad when you don't offer them some Euro. The same in Mexico once you leave the resort. There is still this stigma that in the US that the streets are "paved with gold." In conjunction people who are begging, often are poverty stricken, thus leading to a lack of education. When you were little didn't you have dreams of being a rock star or movie star? It's similar, meet some wonderful American who will just help bring a dream come true. The sad part is the dream is an IPOD.

Yes, I do think a lot of people think that, and I know what you mean, but, If you're traveling you got some money. It can get annoying when people constantly ask you for money, but I know that certain parts of the country are worse than others when it comes to that. But, you still have taker things in perspective. You can't travel in the first place if your dead broke and people know that. I do think that alot of people think if you must be rich to travel and they try to get something off you. Just try explaining to them that you don't have a lot of money, if that's the case.
I've been several times and when I go, I have to figure out a way to get the money to go in the first place because I don't have a lot of cash. When I do get to go, I am limited on funds, don't stay at the all-inclusives, and hang out where the local locals hang out because that's what I can afford when I go. When I go, I do bring things to give away though, like soccer jerseys that I rounded up from my son's club team, clothes, things that I think are nice but I no longer have a use for anymore. If you upgrade your ipod, why not take the older model that you haven't used for a year? If you got a pair of shoes as a gift that are the wrong size or that you don't like, take them and give them away to someone that needs a pair of shoes.
Seriously, I've gotten hit up many times in Los Angeles for some extra change, gas money, ect.. by people I have never seen before. If I can I give it, most of the time I don't have it though.

When I do go to Jamaica people believe that I am rich. Thank God I am blessed but when people constantly asking for money it gets on my nerves. If I see if the person has a need no doubt I will give them the money, but if they just wanted the money just because I came from America I will frown on that.

Well I'm not American, but I have been to the USA as well as Jamaica and there were just as many people begging for my money in the US too so I don't really understand your question. Have you been to New York , or Chicago Los angles any big city there's people asking for money and living on the street with blankets, I think you call them homeless but they are but they are American citizens with nothing but a blanket and a sign that reads please help need money, anyway my perception thats all ...

Its not only in Jamaica you have people begging, have you been on the roads in America, every traffic light you have people there begging. I find it kinda hard to believe that people you donut know are asking you for IPODs And MP3 players. There is something else to your story that you are not telling
