All of your pertinent medical records and DD-214's are needed. Even if you don't get the money, you may be able to go back and amend tax returns for several years. That can help you get back: State and Federal Taxes if you overpaid, and property taxes, according to your state's property tax laws. Sometimes veterans have to send all the information in twice before the claim is approved, unfortunately.
My husband is a retired veteran and I help vets send in paperwork to the VA. It is important to get the correct rating because disabilities over a certain percentage, due to combat, the spouse gets VA benefits when the vet is deceased. I'm helping a veterans wife in a situation like this right now.

You certainly can.

I have a couple of claims open and I was talking with my advocate who's handling them. He told me that they had just won a case were the Judge ordered the VA to pay the claimant back pay all the way back to 2002.

I know of a woman who won back pay for 20 years. The VA will fight you tooth and nail but you must stay vigilant.

In your military medical records the information should relate to all your civilian medical records. That will make it harder for them to deny the claim.
