A database management system (DBMS) like SQL Server is designed to protect, manage and retrieve the data as well as store it safely. A spreadsheet is simply a way to present and store the data. A DBMS permits you to manage your data to prevent duplicates, remove redunant and spurious data as well as make sure the data entered is correct. It can also make sure that the data is not accessed by those that should not. A DBMS does not generally permit data to be simply changed in place as you can in a spreadsheet. It's for this reason (and many others) that it's tought to get a certified accountant to certify the books of a company with accounting data that's so easily fudged.
Once the data is properly stored in a database you can query it, organize and present it using a spreadsheet or other software.

They both have thier own qualities. a database allows you to search for a specific sale or customer, but doesnt do calcualtions. A spreadshhet does specific calculation but you would have to search for a name or number by hand (eye) I would do both. one for keeping track of customers and the products they buy and a spreadshhet to keep track of inventory and calculate net/gross sales, taxes etc.
