The only authentic thing about the painfully awful Robin Hood series is that they left out "friar" Tuck. It is supposed to be set in the 12th century and in England - there were no friars in England until about 1220 (13th century) - so leaving him out is entirely accurate. The fact that a friar is included in the Robin Hood legends shows very clearly that they were written over a very long period of time, so that anachronistic elements are put together in the same stories.

There were monks, canons, nuns, clerks and priests, but no friars.

In the real English 12th century, there were no arrow quivers (arrows were thrust through the belt); there was no plate armour (only mail); molten lead was never used in castle defence; leather was not generally used for clothing (most people wore linen and wool garments, or silk if you were very wealthy); people spoke early Middle English or Anglo-Norman French; the only coin in circulation was the silver penny.

Rule 1 - Never believe anything you see on television.

well as to the arrows, as they are wooden then Robin is doing his bit for the enviroment and recycling them! Friar Tuck? Was he in Robin Hood or just a hollywood fantasy ( kevin Costner etc) The guards are incompetant cos it is fun to watch Keith Allen get so frustrated!

Don't be so deep, enjoy the comedy! Especially enjoy Guy of Gisborne - he is very tasty!

Ahh I don't think that the BBC cares about the finer details - they're just providing us entertainment - and Robin Hood is VERY good and entertaining methinks! It's not meant to be that realistic - come on, there were casino tables there in the castle a few weeks ago and the Sherriff has a diamante on his tooth!!! Just enjoy the show and don't worry too much!

they're no Socialists - for brand new Labour study really Conservative. Any Labour supporters might want to be nicely fed up. they're infrequently Robin Hoods - no longer a lot being given to the poor - so bypass with the latter danger!!!

because it is one of the worst interpretations of the legend ever. Updating is one thing, but why are the costumes so utterly abysmal? By chosing to set it in the 12th century you have placed it firmly in a known time--so why the stripy trousers & sandals for the sheriff, Marian in a trouser suit and cardie in series 1, Robin in a puke green t-shirt etc.
but worst is the lack of any historical knowledge whatsover, and the fact they just repeat the same plot week after week--some one or other gets captured and they rescue them from the dungeon...

The whole programme is so anachronistic that, for me, it is totally unviewable. i know there must be a certain amount of artistic licence, but I feel it has been taken far too far.
